Community-Based Day Services

Meaningful days. Real-world skills. Greater independence.

Our Community program provides community-based day services for adults with developmental disabilities who benefit from individualized support, smaller staffing ratios, and hands-on learning outside a traditional facility-based setting.

Participants spend their day engaging with the community, developing practical skills, building relationships, exploring interests, and working toward the goals identified in their Individual Program Plan.

  • A day program without walls—the community is our classroom
  • Smaller groups with individualized staffing
  • Person-centered planning built around IPP goals
  • Pathways to employment and volunteering

A different kind of day program

Smaller groups allow participants to receive more individualized instruction, make meaningful choices, and participate in community activities at a pace that works for them.

Real-World Learning

Skills are practiced in the stores, parks, libraries, and public places where participants will actually use them.

Individualized Support

Staff provide support while encouraging participants to do as much as possible for themselves—building real confidence.

Person-Centered Goals

Activities are selected according to each participant’s interests, abilities, support needs, and personal goals.

Employment Pathways

Job-readiness activities, workplace visits, volunteer experiences, and community partnerships.

Learning through real experiences

Skills are often most effective when practiced in the places where participants will actually use them. Instead of spending the entire day in a classroom, participants may learn to:

  • Purchase items and manage money
  • Order food and communicate with community members
  • Use public transportation safely
  • Navigate stores, libraries, parks, and public facilities
  • Participate in recreational and cultural activities
  • Make choices and plan daily activities
  • Develop workplace and volunteer skills
  • Practice personal safety and community awareness
  • Build friendships and social connections
  • Complete daily living tasks with greater independence

Community participation with purpose

Community integration means more than taking participants on outings. Each activity should provide an opportunity to learn, contribute, make choices, develop relationships, or increase independence.

Participants are supported in becoming active members of their communities—not simply visitors within them.

Employment and volunteer opportunities

Participants may explore vocational interests through job-readiness activities, workplace visits, volunteer experiences, and community partnerships. Services may include:

  • Workplace communication
  • Following schedules and instructions
  • Completing assigned tasks
  • Appropriate workplace presentation
  • Time and attendance skills
  • Resume and interview preparation
  • Volunteer placement support
  • Exploration of competitive integrated employment

Employment preparation is individualized and based on each participant’s preferences and readiness.

Our program may be appropriate for adults who:

  • Prefer community-based activities over a traditional day-program setting
  • Benefit from smaller groups and individualized support
  • Want to develop greater independence
  • Are interested in employment or volunteer opportunities
  • Need hands-on instruction in real-world environments
  • Want more choice and involvement in planning their day
  • Are working toward community access and participation goals

Every participant has different goals. An individual may want to learn how to budget their finances, while another may want to learn how to improve their communication skills with the end goal of securing employment. Another individual may want to get into fitness or find volunteer opportunities.

Our team works with participants, families, service coordinators, and other members of the planning team to translate Individual Program Plan goals into practical daily experiences.

Progress is documented through participation, skill development, increasing independence, and achievement of individualized objectives.
